An Iconic Mavla Pagdi (Turban) Structure of Pune Metro Station

Project Overview:

Client : MahaMetro Rail Corporation Ltd (MMRCL), Pune
EPC Contractor : Tata Projects
Project : Deccan Gymkhana Metro elevated Station
Scope of work : Design, Fabrication and Erection of Pagdi Shaped structure of Metro Station
Tonnage : 650 MT

Challenges:

The Concept of an Iconic Mavla Pagdi (Turban) tradition of Maratha culture of an elevated metro station having its own challenges right from designing to its erection work involving lot of brainstorming sessions at initial stages on reviewing and finalizing the design, deciding suitable raw material of the structure and roofing, fabrication methodology, supply of material to site, assembly of members and erection plans. The major challenge with Pagdi structure was its critical shape having bends in multi dimensions and varying radius of each rafter ranging from 3mtr to 11mtrs. Due to this complexity deciding roofing material was the most difficult task as not every material because of its material properties can bend below 3mtrs radius. Secondly, bending SHS tubes of (300x300x12 mm) dimension was also a difficult job which created lot of dent, bulging and deviations in fabricated members.

Solutions:

To overcome all challenges, Veritas took part in initial stages of the project to review the drawings, work on methodology of the fabrication and planning of erection program. A dedicated team of experienced engineers, highly skilled welders and skilled labors deployed on the job to work on prestigious project.

  1. Bending of SHS tubes (300x300x12) in two dimension: For bending SHS tubes, fixtures were designed and fabricated along with layout marking was made inside the shop to meet the required radius by bending the members without any deviations, denting and bulging.
  2. Bending critical members in multi dimensions: For bending the critical members in multi dimensions, SHS tubes had to be fabricated in stages by cutting, bending and welding of SHS tubes. In this process our highly skilled welders taken uttermost precaution on minimizing distortion of the job to overcome anticipated deviations during assembly and erection work.
  3. Assembly & Erection: The real challenge begins at site, to assemble each rafter assembly of Pagdi structure and carry out erection at site which is situated by a river bay. All required machinery Cranes, Manlifters, Farhana, were placed at site for the erection work. Our highly skilled engineers and erection team carried out erection, alignment of columns and rafter assemblies at site with safety measures.
  4. Roof sheeting work: The crucial part of the project was to fix aluminum roof sheeting with kliplok arrangement on curving parts of the Pagdi structure. The precision in alignment of the structure and maintaining line of purlins helped the fixing of roof sheeting. Also, for fixing roof sheeting, the roofing agency asked for additional structural members which was also taken care at site.

Results:

  1. The required shape of Pagdi was achieved after putting lot of efforts by all designers, fabricators and erection team.
  2. The complete project carried out not only by precision by also maintained the project timeline of 8 months which was the fastest by other station job.
  3. This Iconic Pagdi Structure Metro Station holds the special attraction of the commuters and visitors in Pune City.
